Het Holland Festival 2010 opent in Koninklijk Theater Carré met een eerbetoon aan een van de grootste zangeressen van de twintigste eeuw: Oum Kalthoum. De klassieke Arabische liederen van Kalthoum worden vertolkt door de jonge zangeres Amal Maher, begeleid door Selim Sahab’s Orchestra. Oum Kalthoum, de Stem van de Arabische wereld, was wereldberoemd om haar reusachtige bereik en ongebreidelde kracht. Haar liederen behandelen universele thema’s als liefde en verlangen, verlies en verdriet. Omar Sharif zei over haar: ‘Elke morgen wordt zij opnieuw geboren in de harten van 120 miljoen mensen. In het Oosten zou een dag zonder Oum Kalthoum geen kleur hebben.’
